I’ve been coaching women on men for years, and I’m also a man. So I’ll tell you something men rarely admit out loud.
We like the nickname more than we let on.
A guy will roll his eyes when you call him Babe in front of his friends. Then he’ll scroll back through your texts later that night and feel something warm when he sees it there. The nickname is proof he belongs to someone. Most men will never say that sentence, but it’s true.
Below are 150 of them, sorted so you can find the right kind fast. Cute, unique, funny, flirty, and then Spanish, French and Italian with real meanings. At the end I’ll tell you which ones land and which ones quietly annoy him, because there’s a difference and nobody warns you about it.
Pick one. Use it consistently. That’s most of the magic.

Cringe Nicknames for Your Boyfriend (What to Skip)
I said I’d be honest, so here’s the list men complain about. Not because they’re mean. Because they land wrong.
- Hubby, when you’re not married. It reads as pressure, and he’ll feel it even if he says nothing.
- Daddy in front of other people. In private, fine. At his mother’s house, no.
- Boo Boo Bear, Snookums, Pookie. These work at 22. They stop working around the time he starts paying a mortgage.
- Big Guy and Champ. Both sound like something a coach says to a kid.
- Baby Boy. Most men hear “boy” and something in them goes quiet.
- Little anything, said in public. Little Bear is sweet on the couch and humiliating at a bar.
- Any nickname his ex used. He’ll notice. He won’t tell you.
What Men Actually Think About Nicknames
Here’s the part you won’t find on other lists.
A nickname does one of two things to a man. It either raises him or shrinks him. That’s the whole test.
Names that raise him tend to point at strength, competence, or the fact that he’s yours. My Man. King. Handsome. Ace. He hears those and stands a little straighter, even if he makes a joke about it.
Names that shrink him tend to point at smallness or helplessness. Baby Boy, Little Guy, anything that would also work on a toddler. Some men genuinely love those, especially in private, and that’s fine. But used in front of his friends, they cost him something.
The second thing that matters is that it’s yours alone. If his mom calls him Bear and his sister calls him Bear, then Bear doesn’t mean anything special coming from you. Pick something nobody else uses. That’s how it turns into a private world instead of a habit.
And use it consistently. A nickname you use once is a joke. A nickname you use for six months becomes part of how he thinks about himself.
Quick Answers About Boyfriend Nicknames
When is it too early to use a nickname? Babe and Handsome are fine within the first few weeks. Anything that implies a shared future, like Hubby or My Person, is better saved until you’ve both said out loud that this is a relationship.
Do guys actually like being called Babe? Most do. It’s the most common nickname in the English language for a reason. The risk is that it’s so common it stops feeling personal, which is why a second, private one helps.
What if he says he doesn’t like nicknames? Believe him for about a month, then try one that raises him instead of one that softens him. Most men who “hate nicknames” have only ever been offered the shrinking kind.
Should I ask him what he wants to be called? No. Asking kills it. Try one, watch his face, keep the ones that make him smile.
How many nicknames should I use? One or two. More than that and none of them mean anything.
