Congratulations on hitting it off with your crush and landing a date. While this can be an exciting time, it can be equally intimidating—especially if you’re meeting someone for the first time.
Luckily, you’re not alone. Everyone has struggled with this bag of mixed emotions, and most people dread the awkwardness when you run out of things to talk about. Luckily for you, I’ve put together a guide to help you spark a conversation while on a date with a guy.
Talk About Where You Are From
It may seem simple, but it can keep the conversation flowing. Talking about where you’re from can help lessen the tension and also give the guy an opening to share something about himself. Ask open-ended questions to engage him and ensure you learn about him.
Some of the things you can talk about include the city you were born in, your favorite pastimes there, and some of your memories growing up. You can also try incorporating funny stories because humor is one of the best ways to put a person at ease. You may find that you have some common passions, which will help further the conversation.

Ask Him About His Favorite TV Shows, Music, and Books
Thanks to the Internet, there are many TV shows and movies out there to watch. You can start by asking what he is currently binging or for his opinion on a certain series. Getting him to talk about something he’s passionate about is one of the best ways to learn about who he is and see if you share any interests.
Speak About Your Hobbies
Ask him about his favorite pastimes to gain insight into his personality. Opening up about your hobbies will help both of you learn about each other within a short time. You can then identify activities you can do together, which will help improve your bond.
Chat Him up About Your Aspirations and Dreams
Speak about your dream car, or where you want to live, and where you see yourself in 10 years. Then pose the same questions to him. Your aspirations don’t have to be about where you want to go with your career. Discuss your aspirations across all spheres of life.
Speak About Food
We all love to eat. Ask him about his favorite food and whether he cooks. Speaking about food also helps set the tone for your next date. You can discuss your favorite cuisines and the restaurants that offer them. This can lead to planning a visit to one of those restaurants on your next date.
If you’re like most people, you dread the awkwardness that follows when the conversation dies out on a date. You can avoid this embarrassment by following the tips I’ve highlighted above.
