Let’s face it, the “tight hug” is one of the most confusing things you can do to a person!
I’ve had both men and women complain to me that their crushes will sometimes give them a “big hug” or a “lingering hug” or a “tight hug” and that it feels thoroughly confusing.
The reason it’s confusing is simple. Here you have a person is being nice and generally friendly toward you. But he’s not overtly flirty, because that would make things awkward. So what does he do? He treats you like a good friend. He might smile, touch you occasionally, and tease you. He makes you feel good about yourself.
And then he gives you that big hug, that tight hug, that makes you swoon!
But is he flirting? Is he asking you out? Is he looking into your eyes and soaking in that sexual tension between the both of you?
Probably not! That’s what makes the tight hug so confusing, because it sends a mixed message.
So let’s discuss what a tight hug means and how you can tell the difference between a friendly tight hug and a yearning tight hug. Let’s review one point at a time.
- Men and women tight-hug for similar reasons.
You probably know the reasons you tight-hug a person. Because tight hugs show affection. It shows that you enjoy this person’s presence, feel some attachment, and is a sure sign of friendship – perhaps a lifetime friendship. Now when you give a tight-hug to someone that doesn’t always mean you have romantic feelings for them.
Long story short, men are very similar in their thinking. Men might suppress their emotions but they are still very emotional creatures. When they feel vulnerable, or when they trust someone, they express that physically. Sometimes a strong hug conveys the feelings and the words they can’t express outright.
And not all men want sex. Sometimes they just want love and acceptance. If a man feels connected to a person, and doesn’t feel obligated to be “manly” or on guard, he will start to show his feelings.
In short, a tight hug is always a good thing. Real friendship is hard to fine. Assume that any tight hug is sincere, even if it’s romantic.
But is it romantic?
- Strong hug and long hug could mean two different things.
A strong hug, or even a bear hug, is a somewhat fatherly or avuncular hug. It’s a hug of closeness, but it’s not romantic in nature. It’s a protective hug from someone who sees you as family.
What about the kind of hug where a guy lifts you off your feet and twirls you around? It seems dramatic, and maybe romantic. Of course, if the guy is just a very open and physically expressive “big brother” type who hugs everyone tightly and lifts them off the ground, it’s much less meaningful!
On the other hand, a long hug is more telling. The longer he holds on, the more he doesn’t want to let go. He doesn’t want the intimacy he feels towards you to end. This is usually a more romantic hug, especially if there’s deeper eye contact before or after, as if he’s communicating his feelings.
- Pay attention to where he hugs you.
Waist hugs are very intimate and feel close – almost like a dance. This could mean either romance, intense feelings, or at least some lust coming from this other person. Touching more is a good sign in general, such as your chest touching his, or your waists touching together. Are you so close that your pelvis is touching his? Or does he tend to lean away from you during the hug or towards the end of the hug – almost giving you a half hug?
The simple fact is that when a man feels close to you, he pulls you closer to him. He not only feels attraction but he also feels comfortable expressing his feelings. Like you “get him” and he doesn’t have to act so tough or nonchalant around you.
- Consider context, not just physical sensation.
Context is just as important as how the hug feels. Men can become highly emotional one minute, but then become sullen the next. Ask yourself if he could be hugging you tightly because he’s upset about something, or feeling sad, or simply needs a hug for encouragement? Because of context, an out of nowhere tight hug would be more promising than a hug that followed a heady conversation or an expression of sympathy.
Is it possible that he feels sorry for you or that he thinks you’re going through a hard time? This is a definite possibility, especially if a guy has mostly female friends and has an easier time opening up to women rather than men. This is fairly common since a lot of guys are old fashioned and still think that showing emotions to other men is either gay, or weak, or pointless.
It’s not, of course, but it might take a while for our society to outgrow that stereotype than men don’t cry or aren’t supposed to “tight hug” their friends.
- A man’s hug might be saying what he is afraid to admit.
Part of context is knowing why a man might be crushing on you but unwilling to come out and say it. Some men fear rejection, especially if they have low self-confidence. He might be nervous about ruining the friendship you already have. If he’s unavailable for some reason, physically or emotionally, it’s easy to see why he’s hesitant to flirt.
Don’t assume too much about a man judging him only by the feeling of a hug. Rather, pay attention to what is called “congruous” body language and gestures. After he hugs you how does his disposition change? Is he more excited to talk to you? Does the hug feel more like an introduction to an exciting conversation, or more like the end of a good chat?
In closing, remember that regardless of romantic intentions, try your best to show kindness to your friends. Sometimes our platonic friendships last even longer than our relationships. If someone feels close to you, whether they’re a potential love interest, a buddy, or just an acquaintance, appreciate that you have found someone special in your life. Treasure their friendship, hug them back, and then see where it goes.
