We’ve all seen the Yin Yang symbol before – the circle that seems split in half, with two opposite “waves” coinciding together, along with two buttons, one on the top white and one on the bottom black. Each side resembles a tear shape but they come together to create a perfect circle. Yin Yang is also known as Taijitsu and has origins in Chinese philosophy.
The symbol represents duality, namely how direct opposite elements can actually become harmonious. Two opposite sides form a circle with a beautiful aesthetic. The ancient teaching goes onto say that opposite elements in the natural world are interconnected and Yin represents the receptive side, while Yang is the active side. The pattern also exists in nature, such as with the winter and summer season, day and night, sun and moon, or in world history, order vs. chaos. In the case of human relationships we also have the male and female identity.
The Yin Yang theory of relationships is credited to Taoism, one that teaches that maintaining balance is the way to a happy life. Everything we know as life or the universe is made up of energy. Yin, therefore is the “darkness” and Yang is the light. They are not only complementary opposites, but also represent a “cycle” which brings about balance.
After creation, so the teaching goes, Yin and Yang came together to form the center of the earth, the birth of Gods, and then eventually the species of human beings. While this happened many years ago, the same energy still exists today.
Yin / Yang Effect on People
The Yin is the feminine energy and the one that represents disorder, coldness, darkness, winter season, night, moon, and well, everything dark. (Hey, blame Laozi for associating women with darkness!) Yin also represents good qualities of intelligence, creativity, introverted thinking and intuition.
In contrast, Yang is masculine energy and associated with sun, heat, summer, and daylight. Qualities include outgoingness or extraverted thinking, adventure, courage and controlled determination. Yin and Yang have opposite energies, which also represents the balance of intelligence and emotion.
And just in case your mind is going to the obvious place (“Well, thinking that males are masculine and females are emotional is an old stereotype…”), you’re correct and Taoism teaches the same thing. We can be any gender but the Yin (feminine) and Yang (masculine) energy can be lean in either direction. So you might have masculine women, feminine men or a variety of in between identities.
Still, the same energy and balance remains. Happiness is also believed to be the result of proper Yin and Yang balance, whereas an imbalance brings out negative personality traits.
Some people also believe that depending on the type of imbalance, too much Yin or Yang can create personality disorders. For example:
- Too Much Yin: Depression, Apathy, Impulsive Habits, No Direction in Life
- Too Much Yang: Anger, Violence, Addiction, Too Rigid
Yin and Yang and Relationships
When it comes to love and passion, Yin and Yang imbalance can play a major factor. Ideally, real love connections bring together complementary opposites, a partner who matches you and creates a “balance”.
However, the teaching goes deeper than that. Whenever couples fight, it happens because of an energy imbalance. The only way to resolve conflict is to adjust the Yin Yang energy – or in literal terms try to see the other partner’s point of view so that you bring about a balance.
Another factor to consider: both partners may experience more Yin or more Yang motivations at any given time. Approaching the situation from an exclusively male/female conflict, therefore, might not a true solution. All human beings are subject to these energies, Darkness and Light, so to speak. The solution lies in identifying the source of conflict and imbalance and then rectifying it.
The answer is NOT in demanding one partner become more male or more female, since oppression this is the opposite of balancing energy. For example, couples who have too much Yang energy (resulting from one or both partners being unbalanced) will fight because of a need to dominate the other one. In the case of too much Yin energy, passivity and lack of communication or effort challenges the relationship, therefore creating a routine of boredom.
When couples are in conflict, finding balance is key and there are many suggested ideas for treating this, from meditation to yoga, or simply seeing a marriage counselor to learn how to better compromise.
Yin and Yang Misconceptions
Studying about soul mates and twin flames could actually lead to misconceptions. For example, the idea of waiting to meet a “perfect match” that will restore balance in your life. This is a Hollywood cliché, not any kind of true Yin Yang teaching. There is no perfect soul mate, even if you believe in souls and twin flames.
We simply have a soul mate and twin flame in each lifetime and connecting with this person, correcting energies and imbalance, is the challenge.
This is why I try to teach on this blog the importance of SELF-DISCOVERY, not just waiting for love to come around. If you wait for love to find you, and then expect that partner to reach a “perfect standard” making your long wait worthwhile, you’re bound to be disappointed.
The best way to approach dating is for you to go out and finding your compatible match, now having a thorough understanding of who you are, what you need to be happy, and what you truly want in a mate. You must understand your own value, what you can give, and what you expect to receive.
This means:
- Loving yourself
- Learning what you can bring to a relationship
- Learning your deal-breakers and turn-offs (and sticking to them)
- Accepting yourself
- Accepting others
- Being honest with yourself and your dates about what you’re looking for and what you’re NOT looking for
Whether or not you believe in Taoism or Yin / Yang the principle will always remain true. Achieving happiness in life is always about balance. Finally finding the love of a lifetime you want requires an investment from you. You must take control of this mission, rather than letting it fall into your hands. Once you realize this, happy endings are always possible because each one of us CHOOSES to be happy.
